Fun Facts Friday - Running is Like Life and Good/Bad

Semi-Rest Day
This morning I woke up about 45 minutes before the alarm clock was set. Rather than try to doze, I got up and got my chest and abs done that I didn't do yesterday. Yes, I know, it was supposed to be a rest day. But I really just wanted to get them done. I'm sort of hoping for a longer run tomorrow and don't want to have weights on the plan as well. Sooooo......semi-rest day.

Wide-arm pushups - 24
Pushups with toes on step - 12
Flat bench flyes - 3x6
Flat bench DB press - 3x8
Incline flyes - 3x10
Incline DB press - 3x12
Pushups - 12

I finished up with abs from Cathe's Cardio & Weights. It was kind of nice getting in a workout in the morning for a change. It's been soooo long since I've done morning workouts.

Running is like Life
As I mentioned yesterday, I had another great run that left me with some thoughts and perspectives about running and life. It came to me, love how that happens when running, that running is very much like life.
  • There are good runs and bad runs just like good days and bad days.
  • Running and life can be completely unpredictable.
  • Both are best enjoyed when you can get out of your head and just relax and enjoy the moment.
  • Neither should be taken for granted. There are many who are ill or injured and unable to fully enjoy either. And you never know when you might be that person.
  • You never know when it might be your last run or last day, so enjoy it for whatever it is (even if it's a bad one, at least  you have it).
  • There are always going to be bumps in the road. You may get tripped up and stumble or fall flat, it's how you recover that matters.
  • Sometimes slowing down is more important than beating the clock.
  • Both can teach you that you're stronger than you ever thought.
  • Both can also be humbling when you get too sure of yourself.

Fun Facts Friday - The Good/Bad
So, now for the fun stuff. Wednesday's run inspired this list of things that are both good and bad at the same time: Good/Bad. While this list came from running, there are so many things that fall into the Good/Bad category. For example: having to go to work can be bad because, well, it's going to work, but it's also good because it means you have a job.

Sunglasses:
Bad: When they start to bounce on your nose.
Good: Because it means it's sunny enough to need them.

Wind:
Bad: When it's gusty and you're running into it.
Good: When it's just the right amount to cool you down.

Drivers Slowing Down:
Bad: Because you have to wait longer for them before crossing the street.
Good: Because they are trying to be cautious.

Stopping at Intersections:

Bad: The waiting/down time and getting started up again.
Good: The waiting/down time when you need a few seconds to recover.

Hills:
Bad: Do I really have to even explain why they're bad?
Good: They make you stronger.

Sprinklers:
Bad: When it's cool out and you don't want to get wet.
Good: When it's hot out and you're in desperate need of a cool down.

Tiger Balm:
Bad: You're achy and you need it.
Good: They make it and it works.

Ok, you know how this works. It's your turn! Tell me some of your Good/Bads.

One quick shout out - I want to congratulate a friend of mine who has recently discovered his inner runner as well. High fives to you! Can't wait to see you out on the river trails.

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
