Girls' Weekend

Girls' Happy Hour
Last night I had an absolutely fantastic time with two girlfriends. We met up at a place downtown called Dizzy's Gypsy Bistro. It's a fun, ecclectic place, but I will say they're proud of their food if you know what I mean. The salsa is great, but not 8.99 great. But it's the company that was most important (and yes a couple of drinks too). We chatted, laughed, gabbed for over two hours before calling it a night. My friend Meg also gave me an early birthday present. She is one friend who absolutely gets me. It's like we've known each other forever. Do you have a friend who absolutely gets you?

Windy 10-Miler
I didn't want to mention it yesterday because I was going to be alone - but Jason went camping with his dad, brother, nephews, and brother-in-law this weekend. My sister is staying with me tonight though so I don't feel uncomfortable saying he's gone. Anyway, I turned in around 10 pm and had a really good night's sleep actually.

This morning I woke up to a cold, windy, gray day. But I was determined to get in a long run today. The forecast said it was supposed to reach 63 and the sun come out. Um, not so much. The winds were insane, and really cool, biting. I hit the river trail around 10:30 with new wind jacket I bought last week. Loved it. Though I did end up taking it off as I got pretty warm. However, on the return, um, hello headwinds from HELL. I got super cold and wished I had worn gloves. It was a complete change from the first 4.5 miles out.

Anyway, I kept going and felt pretty good despite the crazy freaking wind. I checked when I got home and it said 16 mph, but it felt way worse than that. Maybe because it wasn't just gusts, but constant and I was near the water? No matter, I managed another 10-miler today. I think getting a dose of runner's high around mile 6 may have helped. I was all but giggling out loud. It was really comical I have to say. Anyway, I got in 10 miles and it felt really great to accomplish that mileage on my own.

Oh, I tried the Clif Shot Bloks today. I only managed to eat 2 though. They were a lot bigger than the Gu brand I used last week and I had a really hard time chewing them without choking. I had wanted to try a gel but since I didn't have an extra pair of hands to help me out (never used them) and I didn't know how they'd make me feel, I opted to play it safer. The last thing I needed was to be 4+ miles from my car and get sick.

Girls' Day at It's Best
Sarah got here around 1:30 and the skies finally started clearing up, but it never warmed up. We hit the mall for a bit. I love getting to go shopping with my sis. I was really excited to find two pairs of dress pants that fit, not hemming, not being taken, up, down. They just fit. We both found super cute skinny jeans too. It was a very successful shopping day I must say.

After shopping, we headed over to a friend's house (one of the girls I met last night) for some late afternoon mimosas and girl time. We stayed and chatted for a few hours. It's been a fun girls' day all the way around.

Right now we're in our PJ's, and I have Chipotle Tempeh Chili simmering on the stove (and smelling delish). I'm going to sign off and enjoy the rest of the night with my sis. I think we're going to try for a run tomorrow. I think she wants to try for 4 miles, and I think she'll really enjoy running by the river.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far!

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
